Surf Balm with Zinc | Reef-Safe Sun Protection and Nourishment
Inspired by the pure joy the ocean brings me every time.
Surf Balm is a smooth and rich waterproof sun balm that will nourish & protect your skin wisely. It contains 20 - 22% of zinc for UV protection, fair trade cacao powder & butter for deep hydration, and antioxidants that fight free radicals, along with the healing ingredients below:
Coconut oil - Pure, virgin coconut oil becomes a liquid at 75-degrees. When it comes in contact with a 98-degree body, it effortlessly melts into the skin. Luscious Coconut crème eases premature aging and protects and heals dry skin.
CacaoButter and Powder – Creamy cacao butter imparts a delicious chocolate aroma and is deeply hydrating. This wonderful emollient is pressed from chocolate beans and contains fabulous fatty acids. One of the most antioxidant-rich edibles on earth, cacao is a true superfood. Its buttery sweetness glides on the skin, feeding our delicate tissues with purity.
Zinc Oxide – Non-nanoparticleuncoated pharmaceutical-grade zinc oxide is the purest form of zinc available. The molecular size of these zinc particles are too large to be absorbed by the skin. We prefer uncoated zinc oxide as this is purer than titanium dioxide and coated zinc oxide is made with a synthetic silicone coating, triethoxycaprylylsilane. Uncoated zinc is known to improve the appearance of age spots and melasma, too.
Avocado oil - This full-bodied oil is rich in nutritive and conditioning components such as vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E that are especially helpful to dry, dull skin and hair. Due to it's heavy emollient texture, the oil takes a bit longer than other base oils to penetrate the top layer of skin making it a great addition to our surf balm - think of that protective barrier on the skin that helps prevent moisture evaporation.
Need oil - A magnificent rich, thick, golden brown-base oil derived from pressed neem tree nuts with antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal properties to name a few! It has a low SPF, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids. A beautiful tale: in India neem trees were used so extensively, they were affectionately referred to as "the village pharmacy". Until these days neem is a key herb used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Needless to say, my favorite natural sunscreen specially for the water. I am constantly trying new products and find them either too hard or too white and difficult to apply. That being said, it is thicker than a lotion sunscreen because it needs to withstand water and the constant rubbing and touching of the face while paddling for waves.
Apply and re-apply as needed at least every 2 hours or more often if you are sweating, swimming, the UV index is high, paying special attention to your chin, nose, and shoulders. Doubles as a foundation too if you're into that.
